Could Gingrich Donor Give Romney a de Facto Boost?

Scott Conroy, RCP
So far, at least, no one would accuse Winning Our Future, the pro-Newt Gingrich super PAC, of going easy on Mitt Romney.Backed by $11 million in contributions from billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Winning Our Future's television ads have depicted Romney as everything from unreliable on the abortion issue to a modern-day robber baron whose fortune was achieved, in part, through "blood money."The super PAC's ads have had mixed success but did play an instrumental role in Gingrich's resounding victory in South Carolina.Heading toward another…

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop’s battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top — though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn’t necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11′s case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we’d really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test…

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3 desktop manager

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.”

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren’t actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros — it’s the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you’re feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

Hadewijch ? review

Hadewijch was an obscure 13th-century poet and mystic from the Dutch province of Brabant, whose name is taken by the 20-year-old French novice Céline (the non-professional actress Julie Sokolowski) in this characteristically inert film by the French moviemaker Bruno Dumont, a Robert Bresson follower of a religious bent. Céline is kicked out of her convent for excessive zealotry, which involves going without food and drink, and returns to study theology in Paris where her haut-bourgeois family (her father is in the government) lives in some style on the Ile St-Louis.

Having been rejected by the church she falls in with some young Arabs, who introduce her to a charismatic Muslim religious teacher and political activist. He takes her to witness the persecution of his people in an unnamed Middle Eastern country where she is apparently persuaded to participate in a terrorist action.

It’s rather like a version of Louis Malle’s Lacombe Lucien, a masterly film about a dim country lad in the Dordogne who’s rejected by the Resistance during the occupation and turns instead to the pro-Nazi militia where he’s treated with respect. Dumont’s elliptical movie is as stiff as an over-starched wimple and rather tedious, but like earlier films of his it has something that sticks in the mind like the hook in a fish’s mouth.
